I watched him, there alone. This young man with a mask and a hoodie and his sign. Swaying to the music, hesitantly, steadily, sign high, bringing his arm down for a break then shoving awkward feelings aside, thrusting it back in the air -- he stood unwavering. Moving now and then, changing spots in a crowd, his message simple: NO MORE PAIN & SUFFERIN'" The properly placed apostrophe -- a brilliantly wise young man. Wanting to speak but maybe not seen and heard without uttering a sound. I asked if I could take his photo and wanting to say, I'm glad you're here. Wanting to touch his shoulder, tell him he made a difference by showing up, It felt intrusive. Quietly and quickly nodding yes to the photo request, taking a knee without taking up space. Kneeling in return, I witnessed him holding his arm high, lowering his eyes. Softly, I ask if he'll look up. This is the split second he did. Looking up, determined, unafraid, and sure. I took the photograph before he disappeared into the crowd. If you see this, young man, know your presence was strength. Your presence made a difference, gave me hope. Thank you for allowing me to take your photograph. Anything generated from this photograph will go directly towards wiping out the pain and suffferin'. I promise.
